Late Clock Isolation Drill

Simulates the pressure of a broken-down possession with the shot clock running out, training a scorer to create and finish under time pressure rather than settling for a bad shot.

Equipment Needed

  • One basketball
  • Shot clock or stopwatch

Add real clock pressure

A loud, visible coaches stopwatch makes the late-clock deadline real, instead of a coach just counting out loud.

Setup

  • One offensive player and one defender set up at the top of the key.
  • Start a visible clock (or have a coach count down) from 8–10 seconds.
Late Clock Isolation DrillOAttacks 1v1X8–10 second shot clock; live 1v1 until a shot goes up

Instructions

  1. On "go," the offensive player attacks one-on-one with the clock running.
  2. The defender plays full-speed, live defense for the entire possession.
  3. The offensive player must get a shot off before time expires — no shot means a defensive win.
  4. Rotate offense and defense after every possession.
Coaching Points
  • Teach players to feel the clock without staring at it — use a mental count instead.
  • A tough, contested shot with 1 second left beats no shot at all — make that priority explicit.
  • Attack early enough in the possession to have a counter move if the first one is defended.
  • This drill also trains defenders to extend possessions by containing the ball without fouling.

Variation

Start possessions from different spots on the floor (wing, post, top) to vary the reads, or shorten the clock to 5 seconds for an even more extreme finishing challenge.
