Open-Field Tackling Circuit

A three-station circuit that forces defenders to finish tackles in space — angle, close, and wrap — rather than the phone-booth tackling that most individual drills teach, preparing older players for real open-field situations.

Equipment Needed

  • Tackling bags or shields
  • Cones
  • Football

Setup

  • Set up three stations roughly 15 yards apart, each with a ball carrier (or bag) and a defender.
  • Station 1: straight-line closing. Station 2: lateral angle tackle. Station 3: tackle after a change of direction.

Instructions

  1. At Station 1, the ball carrier jogs straight at the defender, who closes the distance under control and finishes a wrap tackle.
  2. At Station 2, the ball carrier runs a lane at an angle; the defender takes the correct pursuit angle to cut off the path before wrapping up.
  3. At Station 3, the ball carrier makes one change of direction (a single cut) and the defender has to break down, mirror, and finish.
  4. Defenders rotate through all three stations, spending 2–3 minutes at each before switching; ball carriers rotate separately.
Coaching Points
  • Every tackle finishes with the head up and to the side, near shoulder to the far number, and a strong wrap through the hips.
  • Emphasize breakdown position — short, choppy steps and a low center of gravity — in the final 2–3 yards before contact at every station.
  • Keep ball-carrier speed at 75% or below until tackling form is consistent, then increase pace gradually.
  • Rotate frequently; this circuit is built around repetitions, not long individual turns.

Variation

Add a fourth station with two ball carriers and a designated tackler to simulate a lead blocker, or turn it into a competitive circuit where defenders earn points for clean, textbook form tackles.
