Equipment Needed
- Pucks
- Full or half ice
Setup
- Forwards break out of the defensive zone as a group of three; a coach or defender stands at the offensive blue line to defend the initial rush.
- A defenseman waits below the far blue line to receive a drop or regroup pass.
Instructions
- The forward group carries the puck up ice as if attacking, reading the defender at the far blue line.
- If the rush is defended (the coach steps up to cut off the lane), the puck carrier reverses the puck back to the trailing defenseman rather than forcing a play.
- The defenseman regroups the play by carrying or passing back up ice, and the forward group re-times their routes to attack with speed a second time.
- Finish with a shot on net once the group has re-established speed through the neutral zone.
Coaching Points
- The reversal pass to the defenseman should happen before the rush is fully defended, not after players are already stopped up.
- Forwards need to change speeds and re-time their routes on the second wave rather than just repeating the same lane.
- Communication is critical — someone has to call for the regroup pass early and clearly.
- This drill rewards patience; rushing a bad initial attack is the most common mistake at this level.
Variation
Add a backchecking forward to increase the pressure on the regroup decision, or run it with two units going simultaneously in opposite directions to double the tempo and conditioning value.
