Wall Ball Stick Work Drill

Wall ball is the single most important habit a young lacrosse player can build — a few minutes a day of throwing and catching against a wall builds stick skills faster than almost any team drill.

Equipment Needed

  • Lacrosse stick
  • Ball
  • Any solid wall

Setup

  • Player stands 5–10 feet from a solid wall with a stick and ball, enough open space to catch a rebound safely.
  • No partner or coach required, making this an ideal individual warm-up or homework drill.

Instructions

  1. Throw the ball against the wall with a right-hand catch and throw for 25 reps, focusing on a quick, clean catch each time.
  2. Switch to left-hand catch and throw for 25 reps, moving slower if needed to keep the catch clean.
  3. Alternate hands every throw for 20 reps to build the habit of a quick hand switch.
  4. Finish with 10 reps catching on the run, shuffling a step or two before each catch to simulate game movement.
Coaching Points
  • Catch with soft hands — let the ball come into the stick pocket rather than stabbing at it.
  • Keep the top hand loose and the bottom hand doing most of the guiding on both the catch and the throw.
  • Move the feet to get square to the wall on every catch rather than reaching across the body.
  • Encourage players to do wall ball on their own between practices — this drill is built to be repeated constantly.

Variation

Add a one-bounce catch off the wall for ground-ball style hand-eye work, or move closer to the wall and increase pace for a quick-stick conditioning finisher.
