Setup

  • Set up a small goal or target area.
  • Two attackers with a ball face one defender in a marked grid.
2v1 Defending Drill12XStays in the passing laneLone defender delays, forces the pass, then closes down

Instructions

  1. The two attackers try to combine and score while the single defender delays.
  2. The defender's job is to force a bad pass or shot, not win the ball outright.
  3. Play to a goal, a defensive win, or the ball leaving the grid, then reset.
  4. Rotate the defender every few reps so everyone gets numbers-down reps.
Coaching Points
  • Stay in the passing lane between the two attackers rather than committing to either one.
  • Force the pass, then quickly close down whoever receives it.
  • Communicate loudly if a teammate is recovering to help even the numbers.

Variation

Add a recovering second defender after a 3-second delay to simulate help arriving.
