Setup

  • Set up a full back-row defense against a coach or hitter attacking from various positions.
Defensive Transition Read DrillHAttacksXXXBack row reads the approach and shoulder before the swing

Instructions

  1. The hitter attacks from a specific zone; back-row defenders read the approach angle and shoulder position before the swing.
  2. Defenders adjust their position based on the read, then react to the actual contact.
  3. Play out the dig to a target, then reset with a different attack angle.
  4. Mix in tips and off-speed shots so defenders can't just guess power every time.
Coaching Points
  • Read the hitter's approach and shoulder, not just the ball, to anticipate direction.
  • Stay low and ready to adjust - an early read is a starting point, not a guarantee.
  • Communicate coverage responsibilities before the serve, not after the attack.

Variation

Add a blocker whose positioning changes the open seams the defense needs to cover.
