Middle Blocker Footwork Drill

A middle blocker has to move explosively in both directions along the net — this drill isolates the shuffle-and-close footwork pattern that gets them there in time to block.

Setup

  • Middle blocker starts at the middle of the net in a ready position.
  • Coach or partner calls a direction (left or right) to simulate where the set is going.
Middle Blocker Footwork DrillMreadyshuffleshuffleShuffle or crossover to the call, square up, two-foot jump

Instructions

  1. On the call, the blocker takes a quick lateral shuffle step (or crossover for longer distances) toward the called side.
  2. Square up to the net with both hands ready just before the simulated attack.
  3. Execute a two-footed jump straight up, penetrating hands over the net.
  4. Land under control and reset to the middle ready position for the next call.
Coaching Points
  • For short distances, a shuffle step keeps the shoulders square; for longer distances, a crossover step covers ground faster.
  • The last step before the jump should be a quick, controlled plant — not a long, off-balance lunge.
  • Hands should penetrate the net on the jump, not just reach straight up on the blocker's own side.
  • This footwork needs to become automatic through repetition since there's rarely time to think about it during a live rally.

Variation

Add a live hitter to block against once footwork is consistent, or randomize the call timing to sharpen reaction speed.
