Setup

  • Set the full defense in standard starting positions.
  • Coach announces a simulated hitter tendency (e.g. "pull-heavy left-handed hitter") before each round.
Defensive Shift Recognition DrillXXXXInfield shifts as a unit based on the hitter's known tendency

Instructions

  1. Based on the announced tendency, infielders and outfielders shift their positioning as a coordinated unit.
  2. Coach hits or throws balls consistent with that tendency to test whether the shift was effective.
  3. After each round, discuss what worked and reset to standard positioning before the next tendency is announced.
  4. Rotate through several different hitter profiles (pull power, opposite-field slap hitter, etc.).
Coaching Points
  • Shifting is a team decision — all positions need to move together, not just the shortstop or the outfield alone.
  • Communicate the shift out loud before every pitch so there's no confusion about who's covering which area.
  • Discuss the tradeoffs of a shift openly: covering the likely spot better always means leaving something else more open.
  • This concept works even without advanced scouting data — simple in-game tendencies (three straight pulled balls) are enough to justify adjusting.

Variation

Use real scouting notes from an upcoming opponent if available, or have hitters actually try to beat the shift by going the other way as a teaching moment.
