Outfield Route Efficiency Drill

Advanced outfielders take a nearly straight-line path to a fly ball rather than the rounded, inefficient route common at younger levels — shaving fractions of a second that turn outs into hits if lost.

Setup

  • An outfielder starts in normal position; a coach hits or throws fly balls to varying depths and angles.
  • Track the outfielder's first step and overall path on each rep.
Outfield Route Efficiency DrillOFdirect routeFirst step on the correct angle; most direct path to the ball

Instructions

  1. On the crack of contact, the outfielder reads the ball's trajectory and takes an immediate first step on the correct angle.
  2. Take the most direct path possible to the eventual landing spot, adjusting the angle slightly as more information becomes available.
  3. Arrive at the ball under control, ready to catch and, if needed, immediately transition into a throw.
  4. Repeat with balls hit to both gaps and straight-on, since the efficient route looks different for each.
Coaching Points
  • The first step is the most valuable step — a wrong initial read costs far more time than it seems like it should.
  • A slightly rounded route that sets up momentum toward the throwing target is often more efficient than a perfectly straight line that leaves the fielder off-balance.
  • Full-speed drop-step reads (going back) deserve just as much repetition as coming-in reads, since they're read differently.
  • This is a refinement drill — it works best with outfielders who already have solid fundamentals and are ready to sharpen their reads.

Variation

Add a stopwatch to time routes to a marked landing spot, or hit balls with a real bat for more realistic trajectory reads than a throw.
