- Pair up players in a small marked area or open space.
- One player dribbles in place or walks slowly with the ball; the partner defends.
Instructions
- The offensive player walks or dribbles slowly within a small area while the defender stays an arm's length away at all times.
- The defender keeps hands up and active but is not allowed to reach in and try to steal the ball.
- Switch roles after 30-45 seconds.
- Progress to the offensive player moving a bit faster once the spacing habit is solid.
Coaching Points
- An arm's length away is close enough to contest but far enough to react.
- Active hands, not grabby hands - the goal is discouraging a pass or shot, not fouling.
- Stay on the balls of the feet, ready to move in any direction.
Variation
Add a second defender for a very basic 2-on-1 shell look.
