Equipment Needed
- One basketball
- One hoop
Setup
- Defender starts on the baseline at the elbow; offensive player starts at the wing or corner.
- Coach stands in the middle with the ball to initiate the drill.
Instructions
- Coach passes ball to an offensive player at the wing or corner.
- Defender sprints from the baseline to contest, staying low and under control.
- Defender closes out with hands active but controlled, no body contact.
- Offensive player attempts a shot while defender contests; repeat for 10 to 12 reps per player.
Coaching Points
- Sprint with purpose but finish with small, controlled steps to avoid over-extending.
- Hands should be high and active on the catch, not reaching in with the body.
- Slide feet on the last two steps rather than running full-speed right at the shooter.
- Contest the release point without fouling - vertical hands are key.
Variation
Add a live 1v1 element after the shot so the defender can recover and defend the drive. Progress to multiple shooters rotating around the perimeter for continuous reps.
