Mirror Drill sharpens lateral quickness and balance for defensive backs and linemen alike by having one player react to another's movement in real time, without any equipment needed.

Equipment Needed

  • None required
  • Cones optional to mark a boundary

Setup

  • Partners face each other, about 3 to 5 yards apart, in a two-point athletic stance.
  • Optionally mark a 5-yard-wide boundary with cones so the leader has clear limits.
Mirror DrillLLeader shufflesMMirrors, stays squarePartners 3–5 yd apart, two-point stance10–15 sec bursts; no crossing the feet while mirroring

Instructions

  1. The leader shuffles side to side, forward, and backward at random within the marked area.
  2. The mirroring player stays square, matching the leader's movement without crossing their feet.
  3. Work in 10 to 15 second bursts, then switch roles.
  4. Complete 4 to 6 rounds per partner for a full set.
Coaching Points
  • Stay low with a wide base — bouncing up out of the stance kills reaction time.
  • No crossover steps; shuffle with the feet staying under the shoulders.
  • Keep eyes on the leader's hips, not their shoulders or head, since hips don't fake direction.
  • Hands stay active and ready, mimicking real game-position hands.

Variation

Add a ball the mirroring player must catch on the leader's command for a combined agility-and-hands drill, or extend the burst time to 20 seconds for a conditioning emphasis with older groups.
