ReceivingRoutes

Route Running Progression Drill

This progression builds receivers' footwork, depth control, and break sharpness on fundamental routes. Starting dry (without the ball) and progressing to live catching, receivers develop the consistency and precision needed to be reliable targets.

Equipment Needed

  • Football
  • Cones to mark lines of scrimmage and depth markers
  • Optional: line markers for routes

Setup

  • Mark a line of scrimmage with a cone; set depth markers at 5, 10, and 15 yards.
  • Receivers line up at the line of scrimmage; coach stands 10 to 15 yards back with a ball (Stage 3).

Instructions

  1. Stage 1: Receiver runs to depth (5, 10, or 15 yards) and sits; focus on plant-and-break footwork, not speed.
  2. Stage 2: Receiver runs routes (slant, out, dig, corner) from the line, working on sharp breaks and ball awareness.
  3. Stage 3: Add a coach with a football to simulate game speed; receiver runs the route and catches the pass.
  4. Run 4 to 6 reps per route, then move to the next route to build consistency across the tree.
Coaching Points
  • Plant foot is critical - the last step determines break sharpness. A good plant makes the route crisp and deceptive.
  • Keep depth consistent - drifting too deep or cutting the route short ruins timing with the quarterback.
  • Eyes up for the ball - receivers should catch in peripheral vision, not turn their head away from the QB too early.
  • Acceleration through the break, not before it - stay controlled until the plant, then explode.

Variation

Add a defender trailing the receiver to simulate coverage. Restrict the receiver to one route for an entire rotation to build muscle memory. Progress to multiple receivers running routes on the same play.
