Equipment Needed

  • Several balls
  • Cones to mark field

Setup

  • Set up a half-field or full-field grid depending on age and fitness level.
  • Two teams attack one goal; when possession changes, the team that regained the ball immediately attacks.
Transition Counter-Attack Drillturnover123XattackWin the ball, break forward in numbers before the defense recovers

Instructions

  1. Attacking team tries to score against defenders; when the ball is lost or goes out, defending team quickly transitions to attack.
  2. Attacking players break forward in numbers (2v1 or 3v2 situation), using pace and directness to exploit space.
  3. Supporting attackers position for pass options; ball carrier looks to beat the defender with a pass or dribble.
  4. Finish with a shot or clear chance within 8 to 10 seconds before the defending team can recover.
Coaching Points
  • The first touch should be forward, not back - immediately attack downfield, don't pause with the ball.
  • Support players should stay wider and ahead of the ball carrier, spreading the defense.
  • Use fewer touches and one-touch passes to keep play moving - speed of play is everything in a counter.
  • Finish quickly with a shot or clear chance; if defenders recover numbers, possession is lost.

Variation

Add a goalkeeper and require a finish (shot) for the counter to count as successful. Adjust the field size and player numbers (3v2, 4v3) to change the difficulty and numbers advantage.
