Baserunning Basics Drill

The very first baserunning lesson: run hard through first base, and know to look up for a coach's signal at every base after that.

Equipment Needed

  • Bases
  • Cones if bases unavailable

No bases? Cones work fine

A set of field cones is a perfect stand-in for bases when you're working on grass without a marked diamond.

Setup

  • Players line up at home plate, one at a time.
  • A coach stands near first base to give simple stop/go signals.
Baserunning Basics DrillBsprintCsignalRun hard through first, then look for the coach's signal

Instructions

  1. On "go," the player sprints hard out of the batter's box toward first base.
  2. Run through the bag at full speed rather than slowing down before reaching it.
  3. After touching first, look toward the coach for a signal to either return or continue to second.
  4. Rotate through the line, occasionally starting runners from first or second base to practice rounding a bag.
Coaching Points
  • Running THROUGH first base (not slowing into it) is the single biggest habit this drill builds.
  • Teach players to find the coach with their eyes immediately after touching the bag, not to guess.
  • Straight-line sprinting to first; save the rounding technique for runners going to second or beyond.
  • Keep it fun with a "beat your own time" element if a stopwatch is available.

Variation

Add a coach hitting a ball for a live read, or set up a simple relay race between two lines for a competitive finish.
