  • Rotate through three stations: comebackers, bunt coverage, and covering first base.
Pitcher Fielding Practice (PFP) DrillP1BcomebackerComebackers, bunt coverage, and covering first — three stations

Instructions

  1. Comebacker station: coach rolls or hits a ball back at the mound; pitcher fields it cleanly and throws to first.
  2. Bunt coverage station: coach shows a bunt; pitcher breaks toward the ball, fields it, and throws to the base called by the defense.
  3. Cover-first station: a ground ball is hit to the first baseman, who fields it away from the bag; pitcher sprints to cover first for the throw.
  4. Rotate pitchers through all three stations so everyone gets each repetition.
Coaching Points
  • On covering first, the pitcher should run in foul territory and look for the throw before reaching the bag, not stare at their feet.
  • Fielding a comebacker cleanly matters more than rushing the throw — secure it first.
  • On bunt coverage, communication with the catcher and corner infielders about who fields the ball and who covers the base prevents collisions and missed plays.
  • This is one of the most game-relevant drill packages a pitcher can run — it deserves regular repetition, not just a once-a-season session.

Variation

Add a full simulated at-bat with a coach calling the situation before each rep, or run all three scenarios back-to-back for a conditioning element.
