- Five defenders set up in a 2-3 zone shape; offensive players stand around the perimeter with a ball.
- No live offensive movement yet — just ball reversal to start.
Instructions
- Offense passes the ball around the perimeter from spot to spot.
- On each pass, all five defenders shift their zone shape toward the ball side.
- The defender closest to the ball closes out; the rest fill the gaps behind them.
- After 8–10 passes, switch the offensive and defensive groups.
Coaching Points
- Defenders should move on the pass, not after the catch — anticipate, don't just react.
- Talk constantly; zone defense breaks down fastest when players stop communicating.
- Keep the zone shape compact; gaps between defenders are exactly what a good offense will attack.
- No defender should ever be caught flat-footed watching the ball without moving.
Variation
Add a skip pass across the zone to test rotation speed, or let the offense attack live once shape and rotations look clean.
