Mark the zones
Cones help define each zone clearly so safeties and corners can rep their shell reads without confusion about landmarks.

- Set up two deep safeties and corners in their Cover 2 alignment; a quarterback and receivers run route combinations.
- Mark the deep zone boundaries each safety is responsible for.
Instructions
- Safeties read the quarterback's drop and eyes while keeping receivers in their peripheral vision.
- Corners squeeze routes toward their safety help, staying aware of any vertical threat.
- On the throw, the nearest defender breaks hard on the ball, not just toward the receiver's current spot.
- Rotate route concepts so defenders see different combinations attacking the coverage.
Coaching Points
- Reading the quarterback's shoulders and eyes gives a defender a head start that reading the receiver alone never will.
- Corners have to balance jamming the route at the line with staying disciplined for a double move.
- The safety's deep help only works if they're actually in position BEFORE the ball is thrown, not scrambling to get there after.
- This coverage has a known weakness in the deep middle and the flats — make sure players understand what they're protecting.
Variation
Run it against a live scripted route tree designed to attack the coverage's weak points, or add a pass rush to create realistic throw timing.
