Build out your practice kit

This drill just needs a football and a receiver, but a basic coaching-aid kit keeps the rest of practice running smoothly.

Setup

  • A cornerback lines up in press alignment across from a receiver at the line of scrimmage.
  • A quarterback or coach signals the snap.
Man-Press Technique DrillWRCBpressreleasestay in phaseActive jam with both hands, then open the hips and run in phase

Instructions

  1. On the snap, the corner jams the receiver with both hands, aiming to disrupt their release and timing.
  2. If the receiver releases outside, the corner opens their hips and runs with them, staying on top.
  3. If the receiver releases inside, the corner mirrors with a different hip turn, staying in phase.
  4. Play the route out to completion or incompletion; reset and repeat from both releases.
Coaching Points
  • The jam has to be active, with both hands, not a passive stand-and-wait — a good jam changes the whole route's timing.
  • Hip turn technique matters more than straight-line speed for staying in phase with the receiver.
  • Eyes should be on the receiver's hip/frame, not their eyes or the ball, to avoid getting faked out.
  • Losing the jam is not the end of the rep — teach recovery technique for when the initial press doesn't fully connect.

Variation

Add a full route tree so the corner has to read and react rather than knowing the route in advance, or add a quarterback actually throwing the ball for a complete rep.
