  • Leave enough space for players to approach and scoop safely.
Scooping Basics DrillPscoop throughLow, wide stance; angle the stick down to the ball

Instructions

  1. Approach the ball with knees bent and the stick angled down toward the ground.
  2. Scoop through the ball in one smooth motion, bringing the stick up and into a cradle position.
  3. Practice this from a standing start 8–10 times.
  4. Once comfortable, add a few slow running steps into the scoop.
Coaching Points
  • A low, wide base makes scooping far easier and more balanced than standing tall.
  • The stick should be moving THROUGH the ball, not stabbing straight down at it.
  • It's fine if the first several attempts miss or bobble — that's completely normal at this age.
  • Bring the ball up into a cradle position immediately after every successful scoop to build the full habit.

Variation

Roll the ball gently instead of leaving it stationary for a moving-target challenge, or turn it into a simple relay race.
