PassingServe Receive

Serve Receive Passing Lanes

This drill trains passers to read a serve early, move into the ball's path, and deliver a consistent, controlled pass to a target — usually the setter's zone — which is the single most important skill for winning rallies before they start.

Equipment Needed

  • Several balls
  • Net
  • Cones to mark lanes (optional)

Setup

  • Three receivers line up in serve receive positions across the back row; a target player or cone marks the setter's zone.
  • One server stands on the opposite side of the net, serving from behind the endline.

Instructions

  1. Server serves to a receiver's lane; the receiving player passes the ball to the target zone.
  2. Rotate which receiver the serve is directed at so all three get repetitions from different angles.
  3. Track passes that land in the target zone versus those that miss, giving the group a clear success measure.
  4. Increase serve difficulty (float serve, deeper serve, shorter serve) as the group's passing improves.
Coaching Points
  • Get the body behind the ball early rather than reaching with the arms at the last second.
  • Platform angle points toward the target zone, not back at the server.
  • Call the serve ('mine' or 'ball') the moment it's clear who is receiving it.
  • Stay low and ready in an athletic position before every serve — a static, upright stance slows reaction time.

Variation

Add a second server alternating sides to simulate rotation-specific serve receive, or add a live set-and-hit finish after each successful pass.
