Equipment Needed
- 1 ball per group
- 4 gloves
Setup
- Four players form a square roughly 20 to 40 yards per side, depending on age and arm strength.
- Assign each corner a throwing distance and angle appropriate for the group's skill level.
Instructions
- Players throw around the square in one direction for 2 minutes, focusing on a quick transfer from glove to release.
- Reverse direction for another 2 minutes to work the opposite footwork pattern.
- Add a random-order call from the coach, requiring players to locate and hit a specific corner on demand.
- Finish with a competitive round — count consecutive clean catches as a team target.
Coaching Points
- Catch with two hands and get the throwing hand into the glove immediately to speed up the transfer.
- Step directly toward the target with the front foot on every throw.
- Throw through the receiver's chest, not at their feet or over their head.
- Increase distance gradually as arm strength and accuracy allow — accuracy always comes before distance.
Variation
Add a one-hop throw requirement for infield-specific work, or require a crow-hop before each throw to simulate outfield mechanics.
