  • Players line up facing the coach with open space behind them.
  • Coach stands facing the line with a ball or hand signal ready.
Backpedal and Break DrillPCbackpedalbreakBackpedal under control, low and balancedOn the call, plant and break hard toward the ball

Instructions

  1. On the signal, players backpedal under control, staying low with eyes on the coach.
  2. On a called direction (left, right) or a thrown ball, the player plants and breaks hard toward it.
  3. Sprint 5 yards in the direction of the break before resetting.
  4. Repeat 5–6 times, varying the timing of the call.
Coaching Points
  • Stay low and balanced through the backpedal — standing too tall makes the break slow and clumsy.
  • The plant foot drives hard in the new direction; a rounded, lazy turn costs valuable time in a real game.
  • Keep the eyes up throughout, never turning the back to the play during the backpedal.
  • This is a foundational movement for any position that has to read-and-react in space, not just defensive backs.

Variation

Add a thrown ball to catch after the break for a full read-react-catch sequence, or randomize the call timing further to sharpen reaction speed.
