- Pairs line up as quarterback and running back in a short mesh point lane.
- One ball per pair to start each rep.
Instructions
- The runner approaches the mesh point with the near arm forming a pocket (elbow up, forearm across the body).
- The quarterback places the ball firmly into the pocket, holding on until feeling the runner secure it.
- The runner clamps down on the ball immediately and tucks it high and tight.
- Repeat from both sides (handoffs to the left and to the right).
Coaching Points
- The quarterback should never just toss or release the ball early — hold on until the exchange is confirmed.
- The runner's pocket has to be ready and stable before the quarterback ever reaches the mesh point.
- Eyes stay downfield through the exchange, not down at the ball, for both players.
- Fumbles at this stage are almost always a rushed exchange — slow the rep down and rebuild the timing.
Variation
Add a jog-speed handoff once the stationary exchange is clean, or add a linebacker reading the mesh point for a game-realistic look.
