Setup

  • Set up a running lane with 2–3 cones or bags that can represent open or closed gaps.
  • A coach or player stands at the mesh point to hand off the ball.
Ball Carrier Vision DrillRBread & cutRead each gap marker; cut away from a closed one

Instructions

  1. The runner takes the handoff and reads the first cone/bag: if it represents a closed gap, cut away from it.
  2. Continue reading each subsequent gap marker and adjusting the path accordingly.
  3. Finish the run through the open lane at full speed once the read is made.
  4. Vary which gaps are "open" or "closed" each rep so the runner can't memorize the pattern.
Coaching Points
  • The decision should happen quickly — hesitating in the hole is often worse than a slightly wrong read committed to fully.
  • Keep the shoulders square to the line of scrimmage as long as possible before committing to a cut.
  • Downhill, decisive running beats indecisive dancing behind the line almost every time.
  • This drill builds the visual habit of reading defenders' leverage, which transfers directly to game situations.

Variation

Add a live defender at each gap marker for a real leverage read, or increase to a longer lane with more decision points.
