Advanced Shooting Mechanics Drill

Keep balls in the shooting line

A bulk bag of lacrosse balls keeps advanced shooting-mechanics reps flowing without a pause to collect balls.

Setup

  • Shooters work individually or in small groups with a goal and a feeder supplying balls.
  • Focus each set of reps on one specific mechanical element.
Advanced Shooting Mechanics DrillStop-hand snapHip rotation, top-hand snap, varying the release point

Instructions

  1. Work through a full hip rotation into the shot, generating power from the legs and core rather than the arms alone.
  2. Snap the top hand through release for extra velocity, keeping the bottom hand as the guide.
  3. Practice varying the release point (overhand, sidearm, underhand) to create different shot angles on the goalie.
  4. Finish each rep with a full follow-through toward the specific target area called before the shot.
Coaching Points
  • Power comes from the ground up — legs and hips first, then the arm and stick snap through last.
  • A quick release matters as much as raw power once a shooter faces a real defense and goalie.
  • Varying the release angle gives a shooter more ways to beat a goalie who has scouted a single release point.
  • This is refinement work for players who already have solid basic shooting mechanics — it's not the place to start for a beginner.

Variation

Add a live goalie for real feedback and competition, or add a defender applying a check as the shot is released for full game realism.
