Face-Off Technique Drill

Winning a face-off requires a mix of hand speed, leverage, and anticipation — a specialized skill that deserves its own dedicated technical practice separate from general stick work.

A reliable stick matters here

A durable practice stick holds up to the clamp-and-rake battle that face-off technique work is built around.

Setup

  • Two face-off specialists set up in the proper stance across from each other.
  • A coach or player administers the whistle/clamp count to start each rep.
Face-Off Technique DrillABLow stance, explosive clamp or rake technique, quick exit

Instructions

  1. Set up in a low, balanced stance with the stick positioned for the specific technique being practiced (clamp, rake, or jump).
  2. On the whistle, execute the chosen technique explosively, aiming to gain possession immediately.
  3. Follow the win with a quick exit move to secure possession away from the opponent.
  4. Rotate techniques and opponents so players build a varied toolkit rather than relying on just one move.
Coaching Points
  • Hand speed and technique win far more face-offs than raw strength alone — emphasize quick, precise movements.
  • Anticipating the whistle (without false-starting) takes real practice and focus — rep the timing specifically.
  • A won face-off that's immediately lost to a poor exit move doesn't actually help the team — always finish the possession.
  • This is a specialist skill; dedicated players benefit from significant extra repetition beyond a normal team session.

Variation

Add wing players to practice the full unit's support on a face-off, or focus a whole session on just one specific technique to build real mastery.
