Setup

  • Set up a small-sided possession game (4v4 or similar) in a tight grid.
  • Play begins with one team in possession.
Counter-Pressing DrillSmall-sided possession; press hard the instant the ball is lostPPPP5-second swarm to win the ball back the instant possession changes

Instructions

  1. Play normal possession rules until the ball is lost.
  2. The instant possession changes, the team that just lost the ball swarms to win it back within 5 seconds.
  3. If the ball isn't recovered within that window, the group resets to a calmer defensive shape.
  4. Rotate which team starts with possession each round.
Coaching Points
  • The counter-press starts with the players closest to the ball, cutting off the easiest outlet passes first.
  • Speed of reaction matters more than raw effort — the first two seconds after losing the ball are the most valuable.
  • If the immediate press doesn't win it back quickly, recognize that and drop into shape rather than chasing recklessly.
  • This is a team habit, not an individual one — everyone nearby joins the counter-press, not just the player who lost the ball.

Variation

Add a bonus point for winning the ball back within the 5-second window, or run it as a full possession game with counter-press scoring throughout.
