Keep the switches coming

Setup

  • Mark two wide channels on either side of the field with a group of players in each.
  • One ball starts on one side.
Long Ball Switching Play DrillAGroup 1BGroup 2switchStrike a diagonal switch to the far channel; settle and attack

Instructions

  1. The player on the ball side looks across the field and strikes a driven or lofted pass to the far channel.
  2. The receiving group controls the switch, settles the ball, and looks to attack the open space.
  3. After a few touches, switch the ball back to the original side.
  4. Rotate players between channels so everyone practices striking the switch pass.
Coaching Points
  • The switch is most valuable when the far side is genuinely open — teach players to scan before striking it.
  • A driven pass with backspin is easier to control than a pass that skids on arrival.
  • The first touch after a switch should take the ball forward, not just stop it dead.
  • Weight and accuracy matter more than raw power on this pass.

Variation

Add a defender to close down the switch, forcing a quicker decision, or add a small goal on each side to finish the sequence.
