Setup

  • Mark the field into five vertical channels; emphasize the two half-space channels on each side of center.
  • Set up an attacking group building possession with an emphasis on occupying the half-spaces.

Instructions

  1. Attackers must keep at least one player in each half-space at all times during the possession phase.
  2. Look for combinations between the half-space player, the wide player, and the central player to break down the defense.
  3. Reward possession sequences that use a half-space player as the key passing outlet.
  4. Rotate which players occupy the half-spaces so everyone understands the concept positionally.
Coaching Points
  • The half-space is valuable because it offers passing angles to both the wide channel and the center — explain why the position matters, not just where to stand.
  • A half-space player should stay between defensive lines when possible, hard for a single defender to mark cleanly.
  • This is an advanced positional concept; walk through it statically before adding live defensive pressure.
  • Combination play (a give-and-go or third-man run) through the half-space is usually more effective than a player trying to dribble through it alone.

Variation

Add a live defense to test whether the half-space occupation actually creates chances, or restrict the team to scoring only from sequences that touch the half-space.
