Setup

  • Five defensive skaters set up in the defensive zone with an offensive unit cycling the puck.
  • Assign specific coverage responsibilities: strong-side forward on the puck, weak-side forward high, defensemen covering the front of the net and points.

Instructions

  1. As the offense cycles the puck, defenders shift their coverage together, always tracking both their assignment and the puck.
  2. The defenseman closest to the puck pressures it; the far defenseman protects the front of the net.
  3. Forwards support based on the puck's position, with the weak-side forward staying high to prevent point shots or a breakout pass.
  4. On a loose puck or clear opportunity, the whole unit commits to clearing the zone decisively.
Coaching Points
  • Every player needs to know their job before the puck ever gets cycled — confusion in this system is what creates open shooting lanes.
  • The front of the net is the single most important area to control; prioritize it over chasing the puck around the perimeter.
  • Constant communication about who has the puck and who's covering which area is what makes a five-player system actually function as one.
  • This is a full-team habit that needs live, game-speed repetition — walk-through pace alone won't reveal the real breakdowns.

Variation

Run it against a specific opponent's cycle tendencies for a scouting-based session, or add a broken play (turnover mid-cycle) to test recovery.
