One-Timer Shooting Drill

A one-timer — shooting a pass without stopping it first — is one of the hardest and most valuable shots in hockey, requiring precise timing between the passer and the shooter.

Keep pucks in the shooting line

A bulk bag of practice pucks keeps one-timer reps flowing without pausing to collect rebounds off the feed.

Setup

  • A passer feeds pucks from one position (often the half-boards) to a shooter set up at another (often the point or the circle).
  • A net or target marks the shooting destination.
One-Timer Shooting DrillPSone-timerTime the weight transfer to the pass; strike it in stride

Instructions

  1. The passer delivers a flat, accurate pass to the shooter's forehand.
  2. The shooter times their weight transfer and stick load to strike the puck in stride, without stopping it first.
  3. Follow through toward the target immediately after contact.
  4. Repeat with passes from varying angles and speeds to build adaptability.
Coaching Points
  • Timing the weight transfer to the pass's arrival is the hardest part — rep this specifically and expect a real learning curve.
  • Watch the passer, not just the puck, to better anticipate exactly when and where the pass will arrive.
  • A slightly mis-timed one-timer that still gets on net is more valuable in a game than an attempt to perfect it that misses everything.
  • This shot rewards significant repetition — it very rarely becomes reliable without dedicated, consistent practice.

Variation

Add a goalie for a realistic target and feedback, or increase pass speed and variety as the shooter's timing improves.
