Softer balls, better first reps

A set of soft training volleyballs makes a first-time server's early reps far less intimidating.

Setup

  • Players line up facing a wall or net, each with a ball, a comfortable distance away.
  • Start close (10–15 feet) and increase distance as comfort grows.
Underhand Serve Introduction DrillSserveStep with the opposite foot, contact below center, follow through

Instructions

  1. Hold the ball in the non-hitting hand at waist height, stepping forward with the opposite foot.
  2. Swing the hitting hand back and forward in a pendulum motion, contacting the ball below its center.
  3. Follow through toward the target after contact.
  4. Repeat 8–10 serves, gradually increasing distance from the wall or net.
Coaching Points
  • Contact below the center of the ball creates the forward, upward motion needed to clear the net.
  • Step with the opposite foot from the hitting hand to add some body motion to the serve.
  • It's normal for early serves to go in many directions — consistency comes with repetition, not instant accuracy.
  • Keep the ball toss (or hold) low and simple; this isn't yet the time for a full toss-and-swing serve.

Variation

Add a target zone on the wall or floor for an accuracy challenge, or introduce serving over a lowered net once the motion is consistent.
