Footwork to the Ball Drill

Good contact starts with good feet — this drill isolates the shuffle-step movement pattern that gets a player's body in line with the ball before the arms ever get involved.

Setup

  • Players spread out with enough space to shuffle in multiple directions.
  • A coach or partner tosses balls to different spots to react to.

Instructions

  1. Start in an athletic ready position, knees bent, weight on the balls of the feet.
  2. On the toss, shuffle-step (not cross over) to get square to the ball's landing spot.
  3. Arrive with feet set and platform or hand shape ready before the ball arrives.
  4. Reset to the ready position and repeat with tosses to different spots.
Coaching Points
  • Shuffling keeps the shoulders square to the target; crossing the feet over turns the body away from where the pass needs to go.
  • Get the feet set BEFORE the ball arrives — arriving at the same moment as the ball means reaching instead of a clean contact.
  • Stay low throughout the movement rather than standing up to shuffle.
  • This footwork pattern underlies every single contact in volleyball — it's worth isolating and repeating on its own.

Variation

Add a partner calling out random directions for a reaction element, or combine with an actual bump or set once footwork is consistent.
