Setup

  • Partners stand 8–10 feet apart, one ball per pair.
  • Begin with each player working the hand shape individually.
Overhead Set Progression DrillPHand shape overhead, window with thumbs and index fingersSelf-toss → partner feed → continuous set rally

Instructions

  1. Stage 1: hold the ball overhead in the correct hand shape (thumbs and index fingers forming a window) and practice the release motion without a real set yet.
  2. Stage 2: self-toss and set the ball straight up, catching it after each rep to check form.
  3. Stage 3: partner tosses a soft, accurate feed for a controlled set back to their hands.
  4. Stage 4: continuous partner rally, setting back and forth.
Coaching Points
  • Contact the ball above the forehead with the hand shape already formed before it arrives.
  • Use the legs to drive the set, not just the arms and wrists — a set powered only by the hands is inconsistent.
  • Keep elbows out and up through the release rather than collapsing them inward.
  • This progression should feel slow and deliberate at first; rushing to stage 4 too early locks in bad habits.

Variation

Add a target the setter has to hit consistently, or introduce setting while moving sideways once stationary sets are clean.
