Setup

  • Three players form a small triangle: a passer, a setter, and a hitter (or catcher for younger groups).
  • A coach or player feeds the first ball to start each sequence.
Three-Contact Rally DrillPPassSSetHHitPass → set → hit, feeding from a coach or the fourth player

Instructions

  1. The feed comes in to the passer, who bumps it up toward the setter's target area.
  2. The setter moves to the ball and sets it out to the hitter's position.
  3. The hitter attacks (or catches and tosses back for younger groups) to complete the sequence.
  4. Reset and rotate positions so everyone practices all three roles.
Coaching Points
  • Each contact should set up the next one — a passer's job is to make the setter's job easy, not just to get the ball up.
  • Call out "mine" clearly for each contact to avoid confusion about who's taking the ball.
  • Keep the first pass under control even if it means a slightly higher, safer ball rather than trying to be perfect.
  • This drill is where individual technique starts turning into real team volleyball — emphasize the sequence, not just each isolated skill.

Variation

Add a fourth player as a backup passer for a more game-realistic look, or introduce a light defense trying to stop the third contact.
