Setup

  • A libero sets up in back-row defensive position; blockers set up at the net against a live or simulated hitter.
  • Vary the block's shape (single block, double block, block shifted) each rep.

Instructions

  1. Before the attack, the libero reads the block's shape and shifts their court coverage to the area the block leaves open.
  2. On the attack, the libero reacts to the actual ball flight, adjusting from their pre-read position as needed.
  3. Dig the ball with a controlled platform toward the target area for a transition attack.
  4. Reset with a different block shape or hitter tendency each rep.
Coaching Points
  • The pre-read (before contact) sets up positioning; the reaction (after contact) makes the actual play — both matter, and this drill trains both together.
  • A double block usually leaves the deep middle or a tip zone open — teach the libero to recognize these patterns specifically.
  • Communication with the blockers about which direction they're taking away helps the libero position correctly before the swing.
  • This is a read-heavy, experience-based skill; expect it to develop gradually with repetition against varied looks, not overnight.

Variation

Add a full hitting lineup with different attacker tendencies to read, or run live rallies where the libero calls out their read out loud for coaching feedback.
