Setup

  • A passer feeds the setter a first-ball pass; blockers set up expecting a normal set.
  • The setter's dump attack target is any open seam in the block or open floor.
Setter Dump Attack DrillSXXdumpSame look as a set, but the setter attacks the seam directly

Instructions

  1. The setter receives the first pass and approaches the ball exactly as they would for a normal set.
  2. Reading the block's positioning, the setter either sets normally or attacks the ball directly over the net on the second contact.
  3. On the dump, the setter uses the fingertips to redirect the ball with touch, not power, into open space.
  4. Reset and repeat, varying whether the setter sets or dumps to keep the read live.
Coaching Points
  • Disguise is everything — the setter's body language before contact should look identical whether they're about to set or dump.
  • This is a touch shot, not a power shot; teach the setter to place it into a gap rather than trying to hit it hard.
  • The dump only works because it's used sparingly — discuss when it's actually the right read, not just a trick to run constantly.
  • Blockers should be part of this drill too, learning to respect the setter's dump threat without overcommitting to it.

Variation

Add a full blocking line reading the setter to make the disguise element live and competitive, or track the dump's success rate over a session.
