Setup

  • Set up a full 6-player serve-receive formation on one side of the net.
  • A server on the other side serves live balls to different zones.

Instructions

  1. The team receives the serve in their current rotation, passing to the target and running their offense.
  2. After each point (real or simulated), rotate all six players one position clockwise.
  3. Continue receiving serves from the new rotation, checking that receive formation and coverage adjust correctly.
  4. Cycle through a full rotation (six rounds) so every player sees every position.
Coaching Points
  • Each rotation changes who's responsible for which zone — don't let the team just default to "whoever's closest."
  • The setter's release point changes depending on rotation; make sure the team recognizes where the setter is coming from each time.
  • Weak serve-receive rotations (fewer good passers in the front row, for example) need a specific coverage plan discussed in advance.
  • This drill reveals rotation-specific weaknesses that isolated serve-receive practice never shows — treat it as diagnostic, not just repetition.

Variation

Add a full offensive and defensive sequence after each serve for complete live rotation practice, or focus a session on just the team's weakest rotation.
