Out-of-System Set Drill

Not every pass is perfect — this drill trains a setter to still run an effective offense from a poor first-ball pass, which happens far more often in real matches than a clean one.

Keep balls in play

Setup

  • A passer intentionally sends a difficult, off-target first pass (too tight to the net, too far off the court, too low).
  • The setter has to move to the ball and still deliver a usable set.

Instructions

  1. The passer sends a challenging pass — varying which type of difficult pass each rep.
  2. The setter sprints or dives to the ball, prioritizing getting a playable set up over technical perfection.
  3. Choose the safest available set (often a higher, slower ball to an outside hitter) rather than forcing a risky quick tempo.
  4. Hitters adjust their approach timing to the resulting out-of-system set and finish the attack.
Coaching Points
  • Getting ANY usable set up is the first priority — perfect technique matters less than simply keeping the ball alive and playable.
  • Communicate with hitters that the tempo will be slower on an out-of-system play so they can adjust their approach timing.
  • A setter who panics on a bad pass often makes it worse; staying calm and choosing the simplest safe option is the real skill being trained.
  • This situation happens on a large percentage of real rallies — it deserves real practice time, not just clean-pass repetitions.

Variation

Add a second setter to practice a backup player covering when the primary setter can't reach the ball, or add a live block to raise the stakes on the resulting attack.
