Setup

  • A setter feeds a hitter approaching at an angle from the middle toward the right side (for a right-handed hitter).
  • Mark the approach path if helpful for a player learning the footwork.

Instructions

  1. The hitter begins a curving, angled approach rather than a straight one, timed to arrive as the low, quick set does.
  2. Takeoff is off one foot rather than the standard two-foot jump used in front-row hitting.
  3. Attack the ball at the top of the jump with the same arm swing mechanics as a standard hit.
  4. Reset and repeat, working on the timing between the angled approach and the setter's low, quick tempo.
Coaching Points
  • The one-foot takeoff is the single biggest technical difference from a standard approach — it needs dedicated repetition on its own.
  • Timing is everything: the set has to be low and quick, and the approach has to sync with exactly when it arrives.
  • This attack is most valuable specifically because it isolates the middle hitter against a single blocker — discuss the tactical purpose, not just the mechanics.
  • Expect this to take longer to feel natural than a standard middle attack — the footwork is genuinely different.

Variation

Add a blocker to attack against once the approach and timing are consistent, or practice the slide to both directions for a fully versatile middle attacker.
