Transition Attack Tempo Drill

Moving quickly from defense into offense — dig, transition, attack — without losing tempo is what separates a fast, dangerous offense from a slow, predictable one.

Setup

  • Set up a full team on defense against a coach or opponent hitting balls from the other side.
  • After each dig, the team transitions immediately into their own offensive attack.

Instructions

  1. The defense digs the attacked ball, controlling it to the target area.
  2. The setter releases from their defensive position immediately to run the offense.
  3. Hitters approach with urgency, matching their timing to a faster transition tempo than a standard serve-receive play.
  4. Complete the attack, then reset for the next defensive rep.
Coaching Points
  • The transition from defense to offense should feel urgent — standing around after a dig kills the tempo advantage transition offense creates.
  • The setter's release timing out of their defensive position needs specific practice since it's different from a standard serve-receive release.
  • Hitters need to recognize transition tempo is often faster and adjust their approach timing accordingly.
  • This tempo is a genuine competitive advantage — a team that transitions fast creates chances a slower team simply doesn't get.

Variation

Add a blocking line on defense for a fully live rep, or specifically drill the hardest transition scenario (a dig from deep in the court).
